Advanced Perspective Class Midterm

We had to choose at least 3 from 11 assignments so far to complete. Here's what I did.

I chose 2 from the Noah's Ark assignment and one of the Samurai pieces. I am learning to paint in photoshop. I learned a lot with the first one with the cat. I decided to go for a more coloring book style with the kid up the tree. I like the third one a lot, but didn't have much time to refine it. I guess by the end of the semester we should have all of the pieces finished.

The second assignment in advanced perspective was to have figures below the horizon line and use geisha.

I am pretty happy with the first one. The second one isn't as strong of a composition but I'm pretty happy with my treatment of the figures. I need to work on having my figures agree with the horizon line. After I figure out the composition, I need to work out the horizon line, and then build my figures based on the environment. But placing them first is important to design the composition.

I am taking a class that is an exercise in perspective, composition, and storytelling.

The first assignment was to have the horizon passing through the figures and the subject was Samurai.

I enjoyed pushing myself to finish three compositions. I'm happy with the results. There are things I can improve on them and I received some good critiques from class.

I'm starting to try out some value by painting in photoshop. I haven't had any classes that really talk about composition and value in an illustration like this. I'm having a good time with it.

The story is about the Hog who is a tired out crime fighter.

The Sheep is the crime boss.

The Crow is a henchman.

The little Puppy is a citizen of Kerplopolis.

Alcatraz

I rode my bike about 5 miles from my apartment to Fort Point. It was a nice ride, not too rough and not too easy. This is a brush pen drawing of Alcatraz from where I was standing. I like the simplicity and immediacy of the brush pen. You must make your decision before making your mark. On my ride back my tire went flat and I had to walk the last half mile home, but after so much riding, the walking was a nice cool down.

So far the work I have posted here has been dry art class exercises (mostly). I've been focusing a lot on technique the last year or so without nurturing the creative use of the technique. I hope to create and post more creative and personal work.

First Two Weeks of Layout Design for Animators

Our direction was to create an Artist's Room. I chose a video editor. Here was my first attempt with trying to revive my knowledge of perspective and contour line drawing. We are instructed to use a lot of reference and inspiration in order to make compelling drawings... I'm still working on getting that process to be more a part of my habits.

After the critique of last week, I started from scratch to see what I could come up with. A good layout drawing has a clear setting, when and where the location is, who the character will be that uses the space, good draughtsmanship, interesting camera angle, and clear focal points. The main critique I received was to establish the floor plane with more objects and to use direct reference for the curtains.

Drawing Workshop 2 Hour Pose Portrait

I have been going to this workshop for the last few weeks and doing a full figure. Today the scheduled model didn't show up, so we recruited a girl who was straightening up. It is usually a nude workshop, but she was clothed. I decided to work on a portrait because I haven't done a head drawing in awhile. I was pleased with the result.

Here is the culmination of 3 hours of 1-3 min poses and 3 hours of 5-20 minute poses in workshops today. I felt pretty good about this one which was about 25 minutes. The teacher in the workshop gave me a couple suggestions on the side to try in the future. A more purposeful design with tone. I still have a lot of practicing to do.

First was a pencil rough, then clean up pen version, plotting the shadows with the light source from in the other room, and value and shadows with markers. This was my first time using markers and before we went over drawing figures from imagination.

This was my first experience painting with acrylics and really painting at all aside from a few watercolor experiences in high school art class. Over the course of a few weeks I visited my grandma and we painted for a few hours a few days a week. We followed an exercise by Lee Parkinson and copied this painting of his. I learned a lot and enjoyed this experience with my awesome grandma.

Here is the finished version with using the markers. I like using the markers quite a bit, but I'm still getting the hang of them. It is scary to push the values too dark too quickly because you can't lighten it up if you make a mistake.

Here I darkened it up in photoshop to be closer to the values I had intended.

Here is the finished pen drawing of a scene from Beauty and the Beast. It was quite a journey to reach this point. The next stage was to plot shadows and I used Prismacolor Cool Grey markers to add the value.

This was a three week multi-stage assignment and came before the Beauty and the Beast assignment. First the nude figures fighting in perspective, then clothe them, and then place them in an environment. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I lost some details with the scan because I tend to draw very light sometimes.

In this assignment for Drawing from Imagination we had to draw a scene from Beauty and the Beast where she is in her room and accurately plot her and three other objects' reflections.

The scan isn't that great of quality. I wanted to have fun with this assignment but I struggled a little with it. I still need to work on drawing figures and clothes and adding more details to the environment.
